History of London
Origins
London began as a small settlement called Londinium, founded by Romans almost two thousand years ago. They chose this specific location as it proved to be a good location for travel, trade and defence. Over the following two thousand years, the small settlement grew continuously. Even today, visitors can see remains of this early settlement across the city.
A Growing City
Throughout this two thousand year period, London grew both in size and population. It became busier and new neighbourhoods appeared and more and more buildings and shops were built to accomodate the increase in population. New ideas came to light and London adapted, and has continued to do so until the present day. London has survived wars, invasions and fires in order to grow into what it is today.
Modern London
Modern London has become one of the most diverse and famous cities in the world. Today, modern architecture stands alongside historic monuments.
Whether you want to visit modern wonders or buildings thousands of years old, London has been splashed with history everywhere you look. Visitors are able to travel to sites from all across London's history.
